At the heart of the Bay Area is Contra Costa County. Its name means the “opposite coast” from San Francisco. It has served a a crossroads of Northern California boat, car, and train routes for well over a hundred years. Most of the county is small towns and cities that have grown dramatically in the past fifty years. Despite subeurban sprawl, the towns have kept their historic charm and small town character. This shows in the schools, communities, Main Streets, shady lanes, marshy shorelines, plentiful creeks, and agricultural zones through out the county. The crossroads nature of the county continues today with freeways, BART lines, Amtrak, shipping, and bike paths that tie the Bay Area together.
Martinez is the County Seat of CCC. Concord, Pleasant Hill, and Walnut Creek have become retail and commercial centers. The more urban West County has Richmond and El Cerrito. Lamorinda has always been an affluent “urban suburban” oasis. East county Antioch, Oakley, and Pittsburg have seen their populations quintuple, yet have kept their agricultural charm.
