You are a proud homeowner, and you got your home for a bargain. You know that with a little work, you can greatly improve your home and possibly increase its value if you ever decide to put it back on the market. You’ve seen TV shows such as Masters of Flip, or Flip or Flop, where homeowners make big bucks transforming spaces via a sledgehammer, and a new coat of paint.
If you wish to emulate these hardware heroes, then there are a few things you should keep in mind. Not everyone should go straight to power-tools if they’ve never hammered a nail into a wall. So, here are five easy tips to help you get started down the DIY path and significantly improve the resale value of your home.
- Take Pictures, Ask Questions
Don’t let the Y in DIY make you feel like you are limited solely to your own capabilities. The idea is to make improvements to your home, and if you aren’t 100% sure what you are doing, then you might be setting yourself up for catastrophic failure. Before you start on any project that you’ve never attempted before, do your research. Look up directions online, or even better, take a few pictures of a repair you’d like to make or a feature you’d like to install and take it to a local hardware store. Employees are typically very knowledgeable in a whole range of home improvement projects and will gladly point you in the right direction before you get started.
- Thoroughly Plan Out Your Project
Nothing will set you up for failure like going into a project unprepared. This can draw out the process and lead to additional problems along the way. Proper planning includes having all the appropriate materials, including
all the tools you’ll need for the job. You should also know how many hands you will need to complete the project. Some projects are best handled with two or more people working simultaneously. Planning out your DIY project should also include a timeline for you to follow. For instance, you shouldn’t start a six-hour project at six o’clock at night.
- Practice Makes Perfect
When beginning a larger project that you’ve never tried before, there’s nothing wrong with giving it a test run before starting the actual project. For instance, when installing tile, buy an old table at a thrift store, lay down some guides rods (wooden dowels do the trick) and practice laying it before installing it. Or when painting rooms, start with the smallest area first to see how the paint color looks and to gain some hands-on training before moving on to the kitchen or living room. Practicing first will give you confidence before embarking on the actual project.
- Start with Small Projects
If you have several different project ideas to improve the resale value of your home, start out with the small ones first. Smaller projects will help develop your home improvement skills, building you up before you tackle the bigger projects on your own. These easier projects will require less time and materials, giving you a good way to gauge your DIY skills.
- Invest in Good Tools
Finally, if you plan on seriously taking on the DIY homeowner role, you need to make sure that you are equipped with quality tools. Many of the projects you decide to take on will require the same kind of items: hammer, wrenches, screwdriver, saws, measuring tape, drills, etc. By investing in quality tools early on, you’ll be able to work confidently knowing you can rely on these tools to work for you, without fear of them breaking and possibly causing damage to you or your home.
With these basic tips, you can begin to dream up ways to renovate and breathe new life into your home. Remember that not all projects are meant to be DIY, and no matter how much you learn in time, you should always approach home improvement projects pragmatically. With that in mind, put on your work gloves and get to it!
